Probiotic Foods
Pro-biotic foods are big sellers. Dairy products such as yoghurts and curd cheeses are very popular. Probiotic foods contain live bacteria cultures (pro bios = for life). These bacteria overcome the stomach and bile acids better than normal lactic acid bacteria (found in normal dairy products) and are therefore able to reach the intestines. The cultured bacteria are then meant to support the "good" strains of bacteria located in the intestines to successfully help boost the immune defence.

It has been proven that probiotic cultures can help to stop diarrhoea. Taking antibiotics usually decreases the amount of healthy flora in the intestines. The consumption of lactic acid bacteria in the form of probiotic foods can help to restore the balance of the intestinal flora.
Normal plain yoghurt also contains lactic acid bacteria which are able to survive the stomach and bile acids and reach the intestines. However the percentage of bacteria which reach the intestines is a lot higher in probiotic foods.
