What is Neurodermatitis?
Neurodermatitis is a chronic inflammation of the skin with itchiness, redness, wetness, scaling and the formation of scabs. Neurodermatitis is caused by hypofunction of the sebaceous and sweat glands which lead to allergic skin reactions.
Ca. 5 % of adults and 10 to 20% of children have neurodermatitis. About 70% of the children are completely and naturally healed by the time they reach puberty. Neurodermatitis usually appears in infancy for the first time.
Causes of Neurodermatitis
The cause of neurodermatitis is up to this day still unclear. A genetic disposition along with additional trigger factors (allergies, stress etc…) all play a role in the development of neurodermatitis.
The illness recurs in episodes particularly in emotionally strenuous situations.
